Brighouse Echo sport – Town News by Dave Parker

Brighouse Town saw off the challenge of NPL East Division League leaders Hebburn Town in the Isuzu FA Trophy first qualifying round following a penalty shoot out.

However they had led 1-0 from the 67th minute when hot shot striker Mo Qasim slotted home after pressure on the Hebburn goalmouth until five minutes into added time when Aiden Heywood struck home for a deserved equaliser.

The cup tie had everything from the 15th minute when Town cleared their line and then went up the other end and a free Qasim was left one-on-one with keeper Shaun Newbrook, but he failed to lift the ball over him and the visitors survived.

Moments later Town’s left full back Brandon Webster had an opportunity to put his side one goal up but the ball rattled against an upright with Newbrook beaten.

Hebburn on the stroke of half-time then hit a post when it would have been easier to score and the sides went in at the break level 0-0.

It was frenetic end-to-end stuff in the early stages of the second half as substitute Jayden Major, Josh Grant and Ashley Butterworth cranked up the Town attacking machine.

Town did survive a huge scare ahead of their goal when keeper Harry Garman made a great save from Amar Purewal. Play went to the other end and after some blocking the ball fell to Qasim to score his ninth goal in eight games. Newbrook was injured in the attempt to save when he hit his head hard against the post and he needed lengthy treatment.

In the ensuing time Town tried their utmost to close the game out but with just two minutes of added time left Garman was beaten.

On the whistle the game went to penalties which Town won 6-5 thanks to goals from Qasim, Butterworth, Darius Smith, Grant, Ben Tweed and Sam Bentley.

They will now entertain Clitheroe at the Heffernan Utilities Stadium on Saturday, September 23 in the 2nd qualifying round after they beat Widnes 1-0. The mid-table NPL West Division side have just made their well travelled star striker Sefton Gonzales available for transfer.

On Saturday Town travel to south Yorkshire to take on Stocksbridge Park Steels (3pm). The former home of England striker Jamie Vardy had a 3-1 away win the Trophy at Newton Aycliffe last Saturday but they have only won one game in the league.

Town rested star full back Curtis Peters (ankle) last Saturday and he could be available this weekend but former Bradford City midfielder Jack Wilson could be out for up to three months with a leg injury.

No2 Keeper Isaac Khan has gone back to Eccleshill United on dual registration for some game time and in his wake has come former Huddersfield Town academy goalkeeper Michael Roxburgh who is on loan from Spennymoor United for his second spell with Town.

Defender Mackenzie Warne has gone to Maltby Main on a dual registration for some more game time.

Town’s Saturday, December 9 home game with Sheffield FC has been moved back to the preceding Friday night, December 8 (7.45). . Brighouse Town’s new women’s team have got their season underway with an 18-1 away win at Shadwell in the Fourth Division of the West Riding County FA.

Brighouse Town bowed out of the 2023-24 Emirates FA Cup with a 4-2 home defeat to unbeaten Northern Counties East Premier Division side Albion Sports.

Town after 12 minutes thought they had taken the lead through leading goalscorer Mo Qasim but the assistant referee ruled the ball had gone over the dead ball line to the verbal frustration of the home support. Others seeking clarification also thought he had been given offside and it ended up being a major turning point so early in the game.

While heads went down Albion Sports went down the other end and Robbie Fox belted home the first of his three goals on the afternoon.

Town’s response was limited by a tall line of centre backs and on the stroke of half-time Bradford-based Albion doubled their lead when Thomas Ponter converted a corner.

Town resumed with the experienced Sam Drake replacing Harrogate Town teenager Ben Tweed, but it was Albion who struck again in the 53rd minute as Fox bagged his second.

Qasim did hit the side netting after he strode into the box, but it was the wily Fox who settled the tie in the 67th minute with his hat-trick goal making 4-0.

Town did manage to pull two goals back through an Alex Phillipson header four minutes later and and then Qasim finally got the goal he deserved in the 74th minute.

Town now fought to get an all important third goal and set up a grandstand finish but it was not to be even with Albion reduced to 10 men as substitute Ellis Wade saw a second yellow card and then a red one.

This was not a performance manager Vill Powell will have been pleased with after the previous weekend’s two league successes.

Former Bradford PA and Morecambe striker Sebastian Bolton made his home debut for Town after coming on as a substitute at Liversedge.

In Monday’s draw Albion Sports were drawn away to Hyde United, the tie to be played on Saturday week.

This Saturday, Town are at home to Hebburn Town from Newcastle in the preliminary round of the FA Trophy (3pm). There will be no extra time if the sides are level on the final whistle, the result being determined by penalties.

England’s Euro qualifier with Ukraine will be on both the big screens in the clubhouse following the game.

Tonight (Thursday) Town’s U-18 side will be at Ossett Town (7.30) in the preliminary round of the FA Youth Cup.

Brighouse Town secured a maximum six points over the Bank Holiday weekend with a home win over Grantham Town and an away win at Liversedge following a narrow 3-2 setback last Wednesday evening at Grimsby Borough.

At Grimsby, Town took the lead through leading goalscorer Mohammad Qasim on 31 minutes but were pegged back on 45 minutes by a Jack Richardson strike.

Into the second half and they were 3-1 down in a nine minute spell, with both goals for the home side coming from the same area of the pitch-the righthand side- as goalscorer Luis Adlard struck home in the 54th and 63rd minute.

Heads did not go down and Town hit back via Qasim in the 68th minute to reduce the arrears and they then proceeded to hit the cross bar and the foot of a post but just could not get the equaliser.

Last Saturday against Grantham Town Vill Powell’s charges were 4-0 up at half-time and they could easily have added another three with steadier finishing.

Town took the lead in the 10th minute through Qasim and a minute later were 2-0 up after Myron Gibbons had banged one in.

Before and after Alex Phillipson had hammered home goal number three in the 39th minute, Town had those numerous chances to have been even further ahead but had to settle for another Gibbons strike in the 45th minute to make it 4-0.

In the second half Grantham pushed further forward and on 65 minutes Anthony Dwyer reduced the arrears with a powerful shot to beat Harry Garman in the Town goal.

This became 4-2 in the 77th minute and the visitors now had the incentive to go for more attacks on the Town goal.

Town, however, held out and picked up a vital three points.

On Monday afternoon Town travelled the four miles to Liversedge for what was expected to be a hotly contested derby game.

It was played out in front of a 519 crowd and the whole game was end-to-end football.

It was Town who scored the only goal of the match when they were awarded a penalty for hand ball in the 41st minute and a minute later Qasim had made that 1-0 when he sent former Town keeper Jason Porter the wrong way.

Town were well led all the game by skipper Josh Grant and right back Curtis Peters who is looking a tremendous find.

In the second half Town almost made it 2-0 when Qasim curled a superb shot to the left of Porter but the experienced keeper managed to palm it away for a corner. Town also had a good chance to try and make the game safe through Ashley Butterworth and Porter kept that out and new signing and former Morecambe player Seb Bolton also tested him.

At the other end Harry Garman was also under pressure as the home side pushed forward and Town were only saved by his keeping and the crossbar.

Darius Smith, Sam Drake, Sam Bentley Phillipson and Jack Crook also put in great shifts to ensure after a 57 minute second half with added time that they came away with three points.

On Saturday at the Heffernan Utilities Stadium, Town entertain Albion Sports in the first qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup (3pm). The Horsfall Stadium, Bradford-based club are unbeaten in the Northern Counties East Premier Division after three games and last Sunday under the watchful eye of Vill Powell they beat North East club Billingham Town 5-0 in the FA Vase.

Bradford City player Sam Bentley is cup tied and ex-Bantam Jack Wilson (ankle) is injured, but Town have a strong squad to choose from for what will undoubtedly be a tough encounter.

Brighouse Echo Sport – Town New by Dave Parker

For the first time in seven seasons Brighouse Town progressed to the first qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup with an outstanding 3-1 away Preliminary round win at Colne last Saturday.

With a very strong wind coming down the sloping pitch Town opted to defend against the elements and obviously hope they could keep the scoreline at half-time goalless and anything else would be a bonus.

The North West Counties Premier League side were very prominent in the first 20 minutes of the game but Town’s defenders, skipper Curtis Peters, Darius Smith, Alexander Phillipson and Jamie Allsop, along with keeper Harry Garman, defended the swirling ball very well.

Town were slowly by the 25th minute beginning to find their feet and get a toehold in the tie and they took the lead in the 28th minute following a freekick from just outside the box taken by new on-loan signing Ben Tweed.

He whipped the ball in and Mohammad Qasim forcefully did the rest as home keeper Tom Goodwin could only parry the ball into the roof of the net.

Harrogate Town wideman Tweed enjoyed a superb debut and looks like he will prove a real asset across a busy period for Town.

Colne knew now they had to at least level matters and the strove forward down the slope but midfielders Jack Crook and Aderemi Efunnuga

worked well to break down moves and they then opted for the long ball as the first half went into 10 minutes of added on time!

Town kept their hosts out and straight away from the restart took control of the game.

Colne could not contain Tweed, the pacy and skillful Ashley Butterworth, Qasim and Jayden Major a replacement for Myron Gibbons and a second and calming goal came in the 60th minute as Qasim bagged his brace from a corner.

Town made two more changes to introduce fresh legs in Nario Baptista for Peters and then McKenzie Warne for Tweed who got a tremendous ovation when he left the pitch.

Colne did pull a goal back in the 84th minute when Lucas Weaver worked his way up the left and into the box and place a firm drive across the face of goal and the reach of Garman.

Squeaky bum time for Town fans but Crook made sure of the tie in the 90th minute with a strong shot from the edge of the box which gave Goodwin no chance and it was 3-1 as the teams went in to seven minutes of added time.

In Monday’s draw at Wembley, Town drew Leeds-based club Albion Sports of the Northern Counties East Premier Division with the tie set for Saturday week, September 2 at the Heffernan Utilities Stadium (3pm).

In the meantime Vill Powell and his impressive looking squad were at Grimsby Borough last night (Wednesday) and on Saturday entertain Grantham Town (3pm) followed by a short trip on Bank Holiday Monday to Liversedge (3pm).

Manager Vill Powell said after the Colne game that he and his staff were more than pleased with the way the players are performing and he was more than delighted with their effortless commitment.
