Brighouse Echo Sport – All the latest news from the Heffernan Utilities Stadium by Dave Parker
The first of eight pre-season friendlies for Brighouse Town was played on Saturday against a valiant Athersley Recreation side at the Dorothy Hyman Centre in Barnsley.
Athersley ran out 3-0 victors in a game where Brighouse Manager Grant Black and newly appointed coach Danny Frost used around 24-26 different faces, many of them trialists amongst some returning players. Those included new club captain Josh Waldram, Curtis Peters, Danny Edwards and Derry Robson.
New signings ,including Nathan Curtis and Jordan Preston, got important minutes in their legs to start the pre-season campaign. And, with another seven games penciled in over the next three weeks-including last night’s game at Worsborough Bridge, also in south Yorkshire, preparation will be key for the squad as they head into the Emirates FA Cup Extra-Preliminary round tie at home to Frickley Athletic on Saturday August 2 (3pm).
On Saturday, Town entertain Lincolnshire club Brigg Town, (1pm) who have over the years been a real feeder club to the likes of Lincoln City, Scunthorpe United and Boston United. Admission for the game will be £7 and £4 for concessions. Then on Tuesday evening Town will entertain near neighbours Golcar United (7.15), with the same admission prices applying.
Should Town progress to the Preliminary round of the FA Cup they have been drawn away on August 16 to the winners of the Extra-Preliminary round tie between Cheshire club Winsford United or Greater Manchester club West Didsbury & Chorlton.
In the Isuzu FA Trophy first round qualifying tie Town have been drawn away at Gateshead club Dunston on Saturday, September 6 (3pm).
The club’s NPL Division East fixtures are expected to be released next week and they will commence on Saturday, August 9, with an expected midweek game on the Wednesday in the case of Town if they are down for a home game..
On the Athersley game, Grant Black was pleased with the overall performance as he introduced two teams over the 90 minutes , while the home side stuck to a side that really wanted to beat their Step 4 opponents.

In the past few days there has been a further boost for Brighouse Town manager Grant Black with three more players agreeing to stay on and also news of 20 players who have asked to join pre-season training and have trials.
Experienced central defender Kevy Tarangadzo, 33, is the biggest name of the three, with FC Halifax Town loanee and centre-back Harvey Coates, 19, and former Huddersdfield Town and Golcar United utility player Isaac Acquah, 20 joining him.
Tarangadzo in his career with Yorkshire Amateur, Witton Albion, Liversedge, Eccleshill United, Whitby Town and Farsley Celtic has always been with his strong and physical presence a rock in the centre of a defence. When Joshua Grant was injured and suspended last season, Tarangadzo was made acting captain. Coates showed a lot of promise last term and also showed a utility value and Acquah, a fans favourite named as `super sub’ by them, can only go on to much better things and again he is a strong and physical player. Players cannot actually put pen to paper until July 1 and that will be five days before the first pre-season friendly away to Barnsley club Athersley Recreation (1.00). The game will actually be played at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium at Cudworth and the squad will have been in pre-season training for a week.
British and Yorkshire Police centre -back Jamie Allsop has been released.
Off the pitch the club will be playing in the extra-preliminary round of the FA Cup on August 2, with the draw being made in the first week of July.
Season ticket prices have been announced with adult tickets at £160.00 and concessions at £95.00, with an `Early Bird’.offer of £130 and £75.00 running until June 30.Tickets can be ordered from the club treasurer Dave Wormald on Wormald_david@sky.com.
New signing Danny Frost has already got his Barnsley company iSource, a vehicle sourcing company, involved with sponsoring the players’ tracksuits and Nexus, who got involved with the club last season, are once more sponsoring the back of the shirts.
Work has got underway with the pitch ahead of the first pre-season games on it for Saturday, July 12 when Brigg Town are due and the following Tuesday when Golcar United are the visitors.

Brighouse Town have received a major boost in the past few days with former Bradford City midfielder Curtis Peters agreeing another season with the NPL East Division club.
It was thought that Peters, arguably Town’s most creative player, was looking for pastures new after almost three seasons with the club, but he has opted to stay on board and be part of what manager Grant Black feels will be a strong and competitive squad this coming season.
The 26-year-old has had his injury woes but has always battled back and comeback strongly once fit.
He more than proves he was a former full time EFL player with the Bantams when once more selected after proving his fitness.Another experienced player, Derry Robson, who joined the club for the last three months of the season from Bridlington Town, is also back on board. The 30-year-old, who has seen service with Pontefract Collieries, Ossett United, Cleethorpes Town, Belper Town and Goole, before he joined Bridlington, gradually grew into the team last term and was showing his worth when the last few games were being played.
Also back on board is the experienced central defender Kevy Tarangadzo. He committed earlier in week and supporters were more than pleased to hear that news.
Black has appointed a goalkeeping coach for the coming season who has had playing ties with Town. Back on board after a lengthy break is Christian Thewlis who was with Town as a player in 2014 and turned out for them at Salford City as the now EFL club was making its way under the Class of 92 directorate.
Last season he was Liversedge’s goalkeeping coach but they have been relegated to the Northern Counties East Premier Division. There is still no news of a keeper being signed for the coach to work with but Black says a signing is close but does not want any names out in the open until his signing is on the dotted line.
There is news surfacing that Town in the very near future will cease to be an unincorporated association with its ownership vested in its membership as defined by its constitution and become a limited company with a board of directors.
Over the coming weekend the Northern Premier League will be hosting its AGM and then presentation night and dinner in Blackpool and representing the club will be youth coach and committeeman Mark Ellis and his partner.
