Not the best of weeks once more for Brighouse Town as a power problem caused a midweek postponement with Dunston and then in form Grimsby Borough visited the Heffernan Utilities Stadium on the Saturday and went away with the three points from a 3-0 win.
There were problems at a training session on the Tuesday night ahead of the Dunston game the day after and vice-chairman Charlie Tolley called in electricians but they had only rectified the problems by early Thursday morning. So the game had to be postponed, Dunston compensated for cancelling their team coach and then with their busy programme owing to their FA Cup and FA Trophy runs, the new date could only be fixed for Wednesday, November 20 (7.45).
Grimsby, who moved into third place in the table with their victory and one place ahead of their near neighbours Cleethorpes, who lost 4-1 at home to Dunston, were a goal up after just six minutes when Scott Fenwick beat on-loan goalkeeper Paul Cooper at his near post.
Grimsby then lost their goalkeeper Liam Higton when he had to be helped off after taking on board an injury during a rare Town attack. He was replaced by centre-back Michael Jacklin.
Borough doubled their lead on 38 minutes when Jack Richardson slotted into the bottom corner.
Adam Drury put the match to bed in the 66th minute with a smart finish.
There was a substitute appearance for local boy Joshua Smith from Town’s U23 side ahead of skipper Josh Grant being sent off after retaliating to a tackle on him for which he had already been awarded a free kick. Referee Will Cavanagh who had previously cautioned Grant showed him a straight red.
Town for this game had already been without through injuries several key players in Romario Dunne, Matty Nebard, Curtis Peters and Myron Gibbons, plus Josh Waldram who was suspended for a game after clocking up five cautions.
In the meantime Town have lost former Bamber Bridge striker Bailey Thompson to Pontefract Collieries when he looked all on for Bury, and Clark Greaves to Sherwood Colliery.
They have taken on loan from Bridlington Town, wide player Curtis Morrison and had better news on goalkeeper Kyle Trenerry. He made the bench last Saturday and is near to a return which would no doubt see Cooper return to his club Buxton.
On Saturday Town travel to Newcastle to take on newcomers Heaton Stannington (3pm) who are two places and just one point below Town in the NPL East Division table.
There is a coach leaving the Dust Miller, Hove Edge at 11am.
Not the best of weeks for Brighouse Town with two defeats, away to Emley in one re-arranged game and then at home to Liversedge in a second re-arranged game.
The 2-1 defeat at Emley was rather unfair on a battling and at times skilful Town, and a draw would have been a fairer result. Town went a goal down from tricky winger Amir Birchill and then replied with a Romario Dunne strike shortly afterwards, and they had more chances to even take the lead coming up to half-time. Their strike-force just couldn’t get on the end of crosses from the right by Dunne and Curtis Peters, coming back after a long back injury.
Early in the second half Town soaked up some early pressure as Emley came back at them and from a second successive corner from the right centre-back Adam Clayton headed home.
Town came back at their hosts in front of a 549 crowd and could have scored an equaliser but Bailey Thompson failed to out jump home keeper Declan Lambton with not a defender in sight.
On Saturday in a second derby with Liversedge, Town did not look the same side and lost 3-0 in what could only be described as a lacklustre performance.
The previous day the visitors had parted company with their long serving manager Jon Rimmington and in the warm up they looked as though they had come to lift their game after some poor results this term.
On 14 minutes debutant Jack Degruchy opened the scoring for his new club and that is how it stayed until half-time.
Town had little to offer and Liversedge got their second on the hour mark when Omar Sanyang tucked the ball home when Adam Clayton’s free kick had been parried.
Liversedge completed the scoring when former Town player Jack Crook lobbed Paul Cooper.
Last Wednesday night’s re-arranged home game with Dunston had to be postponed due to electric cabling problems with the floodlights. The matter was resolved within 24hrs, but unfortunately not in time for the game to go ahead.
On Saturday Town are at home to inform Grimsby Borough (3pm) before three games on the road.
Town have arranged their West Riding Senior Cup home first round draw with Garforth Town for Wednesday, October 30th (7.45)
Striker Jack Normanton has left the Heffernan Utilities Stadium for Bradford Park Avenue where his former boss Vill Powell is now working as assistant manager.
Coming in from Hyde United is fullback Ethen Vaughan.
Town’s U-18 side lost 8-1 at Guiseley in the FA Youth Cup first round last Thursday evening.
For the second time this season Brighouse Town went out on penalties in last Saturday’s Isuzu FA Trophy. They had back in August lost 5-3 on penalties to Barnoldswick Town after drawing 2-2 after a replay and then in the second national event they lost 5-3 again after coming back from 1-0 down to equalise.
Disappointment then yet again for the Town fans but they are seeing a side develop and one that looks much stronger and skilful to more than hold their own in the East Division of the NPL where they sit in fifth place.
Clitheroe led 1-0 for most of the game after Veron Parny had put them in the lead in the first quarter of the game. Town had their chances but were up against a good keeper in Hakan Burton.
Miles Storey missed a chance for Clitheroe to double their lead midway through the second half before debutant Romario Dunne, who hails from Warrington but has been playing for AFC Sudbury, won the ball some 30 yards out and then advanced on goal to rifle a shot past Burton.
Town had a good chance to go ahead when Burton made a rare error and spilled the ball but were too slow to take advantage.
Substitute Ezio De Santis was also just beaten to a cross by Burton as five minutes of added time was shown.
Town are now without a game this Saturday following the defeat in the FA Cup to Barnoldswick and will next play on Tuesday night at Emley (7.45) in the re-arranged game from August Bank Holiday Monday when goalkeeper Kyle Trenerry was badly injured. Admission on the night will be free for all spectators.
Town were also been left without a game for the following Saturday, September 21st following the defeat to Clitheroe in the FA Trophy and their League opponents, Belper Town progressing in the Trophy but asked Liversedge-out of the Trophy also- if they can visit them on the 21st instead of going to Claybourn on Tuesday, October 22, and that has now been agreed. Town will also go to Belper now on Tuesday, October 15 for the re-arranged game from this coming Saturday.
FA Youth Cup – Golcar Utd 2 v Brighouse Town 3. Sat 07.09.24 KO 7pm.
Brighouse Town U18s side, under the guidance of Manager Mark Ellis, secured passage into the next round of the FA Youth Cup with a fantastic away performance at Golcar Utd in front of an impressive 202 attendance for the Saturday evening game. Town went ahead from a penalty after 35mins confidently knocked home by Archie Lee. Golcar fought back to lead 2-1 before Town struck two late goals from Michael Roberts 87mins and Matthew Hanrahan 90mins, to give Town the win. Brighouse Town will now visit Nethermoor on Thursday 19th September, 7.45pm KO to take on Guiseley in the first round.
A goal in each half from Spencer Harris saw Brighouse Town come back from a goal down in the eighth minute against Bishop Auckland to go on and win 2-1 and move to fifth in the table of 20 clubs in the East Division.
The County Durham side went ahead on the counter-attack after Dean Briggs played Louis Johnson through and the soon-to-be troublesome centre forward took his chance to beat debutant keeper Paul Cooper.
It took Town just even minutes to draw level when, after some pressure and a second consecutive corner, Harris jumped above the defence and headed strongly into the goals to beat Ryan Catterick.
Johnson proved a handful for Town as he put himself about, but the home side kept the score at 1-1 going into the break.
Play was end-to-end in the second half with Town’s Bailey Thompson, Myron Gibbons and Niah Payne showing up well as they went in search of a second goal.
That came in the 71st minute when the visiting keeper and team captain Catterick spilled a header and there to stab the ball home was the experienced Harris who is showing his worth game- on- game.
Town went in search of a third but were denied despite two good efforts by late substitute Ezio De Santis.
Ahead of the game to cover for the injury loss of Kyle Trenerry Town signed Paul Cooper on dual registration from Buxton, who has previously played for the likes of Stoke City, Worksop Town, Ossett Utd and Ashton Utd.
The League game at home to Dunston on September 14 has been called off with the Gateshead-based side still in the Emirates FA Cup. However, the abandoned game at Emley on August Bank Holiday Monday owing to the injury to keeper Trennery has been re-arranged for Tuesday, September 17 (7.45).
Town will have to re-arrange the Dunston game for a Wednesday night within the next 28 days from Saturday week.
On Saturday Town entertain old foes Clitheroe (3pm) from the NPL West Division in the First Round Qualifying of the ISUZU FA Trophy.
Clitheroe, averaging 600 home gates, are currently mid-table in the division having warmed to this forthcoming tie with a 4-2 home win over WythenshaweTown.
Wide player Basile Zottos, who joined Town in the close season, has signed for Rossington Main (step 5), with Ossett United also wanting to sign him. He was in the Doncaster-based side who lost 2-1 to Knaresborough Town last Saturday, with both goals coming from Cameron Bedford who left Town midway through August.
Ossett Utd have in the past 24 hours completed the signing of Zottos.
Town’s U-18 FA Youth Cup away preliminary round tie with Golcar United will take place this Saturday evening (7.00).
