Match Report | Penistone 0-1 Brighouse Town

By David Foy

The Orange Army kicked off their second Friendly of the 2021/22 season with a comfortable 1-0 away win again fellow Yorkshire side Penistone. Though a score line of ‘just’ 1-0 is rarely credited as being comfortable this indeed the case in a rainy, overcast South Yorkshire.

Vill Powell opted to field six trialists from kick off with the only recognisable faces being Goalkeeper Brett Souter, Wingback Mike Starkey (the first half Captain also), Darius Smith, Laurence Sorhaindo, and Shiraz Khan. Brighouse utilised a possession based strategy from the start; between playing the football from side-to-side in defence the trialists playing numbers five and six were more than capable of keeping the ball moving sometimes introducing the footwork of ‘keeper Souter into proceedings. With Smith one side and Starkey the other The Orange Army pressed down both flanks with very little end product. Penistone tried out Souter’s handling soon after with a left footed curling shot that he gathered in his midriff central to goal.

The only goal of the game came in the twenty eighth minute as from a free kick out wide on the right Starkey expertly crossed the ball deep into the back post area, it beat the goalkeeper and Sorhaindo was there to nod into the back of the net. Moments later the ball was moved quickly from side to the other affording Brighouse trialist playing in number eleven the chance to double the lead. Cutting in from the left onto his right foot he curled an effort low and hard rattling the Penistone post.

The second half brought four changes for the visitors as on came Tom Haigh (Captain for the half), Javelle Clarke, TJ Ibrahim, and Alhansanne Keita. The ten minutes further in Souter made way for a trialist goalkeeper and it was he who was between the posts for Penistone’s best and only dangerous chance. The Church number two had time and space outside on the right of the box, took a touch, set himself, and fired low across goal and just wide of the far post. By full time Brighouse fielded an entire signed up team but the second half all-in-all was as dour as the weather.

YORKSHIRE TROPHY UPDATE – TOURNAMENT STILL ON!

We can confirm that the Yorkshire Trophy tournament will still be taking place.

The tournament dates have altered so that the tournament takes place from the 17th May when fans can attend stadiums according to government guidance.

The teams in the tournament have been altered as well due to some teams pulling out. The final teams will be revealed in the coming days.

The number of fans that can attend each stadia is dependent on the size of each club’s stadium capacity and it’s half of that capacity in which the clubs will be allowed to admit.

MATCH REPORT | BRIGHOUSE TOWN WOMEN 3-0 NEWCASTLE UNITED WOMEN

By David Foy

4th April 2021: Vitality FA Cup 2nd Round

Brighouse Town 3-0 Newcastle United (AET).

Two goals from substitute Ami Woodruff either side of a Drew Greene strike saw Brighouse set up a West Yorkshire Derby with Huddersfield Town in the next round.

After an uneventful 90 minutes The Orange Army broke the deadlock early on in the first half of Extra Time. Woodruff kept herself onside, got behind the defender before firing high and left of The Magpie’s goal. Then moments later a mis-communication in the Newcastle backline allowed Drew Greene to nip in and curl into the corner.

With the final kick of the match Woodruff patiently worked her way through the centre of defence, set herself before firing into the roof of the net to send Brighouse Town Women into the third round where they face Huddersfield Town Ladies.

NEW APPOINTMENT | Danny Chadwick appointed U17 Elite Coach

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Danny Chadwick as the club’s new U17 Elite Coach.

Danny Chadwick (pictured on the left) joins the club after previously coaching in his own academy and at a number of clubs including Forza Football Academy, Barnsley Football Club and Cardiff City. Danny possesses his FA Level 2 as well as a FD in Football Coaching and Performance alongside a number of other football coaching accolades. Danny’s role will see him take the current U16’s into next season as the U17’s and develop them ready for the 2021/22 season. Mark Ellis (pictured right) will continue the amazing role he has done as U16 Elite Coach with a new U16 team being created in time for the 2021/22 season with details on trials for that team coming out soon.

Danny who attended his first training session on Thursday night had this to say “I’m very delighted to be joining Brighouse Town Football Club. It’s a great opportunity for me at a great club who have a massive influence in their community so I’m really happy to be here especially now we’re out of lockdown. I really enjoyed my first training session with the lads and can’t wait to continue aiding their development over the next 18 months. The main aim for me is to develop the players so that they are capable of being able to play in the first team, whether that’s in 6 weeks, 6 months or 18 months time. For the U17, we will be competing in the Nerf Junior Premier League and Cup so we want to achieve as much success as possible in these competitions.”

U16 Elite Coach Mark Ellis was full of praise on the appointment of Danny Chadwick to the role. He had this to say “As a young coach, Danny will be able to maintain the level of enthusiasm that is required in continuing their development into open age football. His methods & philosophy mirror currently what is being coached already so he is a perfect fit into the role. The relationship that me and Danny have will be key as what we instill from early engagement must reflect inevitably where Vill wants to be with regards to 1st team recruitment.”

Head of Youth Football Mark Booth also was full of praise for Danny on appointing him to the role. He said “It was obvious throughout the selection process that Dan had a maturity about him and a level of understanding of how the game should be played, with good presentation skills and attention to detail made him the ideal candidate for the job. Mark and Nigel’s decision to continue their good work with the U16s and developing their already excellent relationship with Calderdale school boys elite team providing Brighouse with the best of Calderdale’s footballers meant that the current U16s needed a reliable coach who can carry the Brighouse way of playing into the new season and Danny fits the bill. Mark and Nigel also help provide the 15 year olds the the structure to help their success further down the Academy path which is why it was key they chose to keep the U16 roles.

Working with Mark Ellis has been easy, we have known each other for over 25 years having both been at Brighouse Town and Brighouse Sunday league team “The Star” together for a number of years. We played for some of the same managers and have the same values “honesty and integrity” combined with hard work being the foundations for player development, whilst never losing site of the importance of playing with a “smile on their face.”

There are exciting times for the academy and junior sections for the coming season. We have already announced that the U16s will move up a year and will be supported by another U16 team which we are just about to start recruiting, we are also adding two U14s teams to the club for the coming season meaning we will have 10 teams under the junior and academy umbrella which is excellent from a club point of view to keep growing the junior section but also for the community to see that their only semi professional team in the town has junior sections that have a clear pathway towards the first team.”

Welcome Danny to Brighouse Town! #OneTownOneTeam

Club Statement: COVID Cup

Due to the ongoing pandemic, we at Brighouse Town feel that the recent online poll to determine the tournament name was not thought through properly and the implications of the suggested names were ill-considered and insensitive to the ongoing situation.

Therefore, the new name of the Tournament will be now known as The Yorkshire Trophy and all branding will be updated and redeveloped.

We apologise for any offence this may have caused, it was not our intentions as a community football club.

Updates to follow soon. #OneTownOneTeam

SIGNING | Welcome Brett Souter

By David Foy

Brighouse Town are pleased to announce the permanent signing of 24 year old Goalkeeper Brett Souter from West Yorkshire neighbours Hemsworth Miners Welfare.

After the club broke the news on the 15th January regarding the departure of Manchester United loanee Jacob Carney this is welcome news for the club. The young Red left for Portadown FC in Northern Ireland to continue his own development.

The former Captain of Hemsworth; Souter joins having previously made over 100 appearances for Ossett Albion/United and can also count the now defunct South Yorkshire side Shaw Lane Aquaforce amongst his other former clubs.
On his capture for The Orange Army Manager Vill Powell said, “I think Brett’s ability and experience speaks for itself he’s someone that’s been on my radar for a long time and finally it’s come together he’s captained teams at this level so vocal abilities will be welcomed.”

When asked if the club will be making any further additions Powell added,
“At this point probably not as we don’t know where the season is heading. We needed a Goalkeeper with Jacob going back to Man United to get games at Portadown so that was an essential signing. He’s [Brett] signed until 2022 so it’s not just for this season.”

Welcome to the club Brett.

CLUB STATEMENT

Following a return to action last Saturday against unbeaten Workington and a very satisfactory performance in the 2-2 draw, and then the postponement of Tuesday night’s re-arranged game at Mossley on Sunday afternoon, the executive committee of Brighouse Town convened and have issued the following statement.

Following the Government and FA announcements on Saturday evening, followed by the Northern Premier League regarding festive fixtures, it was decided to request a postponement of the home Boxing Day game with Tadcaster Albion.

Chairman James Howard commented: “This is not a decision we have taken lightly but considering the duty of care we have to our staff, players and spectators, and of playing games under the current restrictions, we opted to request the postponement.

“We have tried to accommodate as much as possible the League’s wishes to try and get games played but feel we must exercise the option, as suggested by the League in Saturday’s statement, to postpone the Tadcaster game and also accede to Ossett United’s wishes to postpone the January 2nd game away at Ossett United.

“With Tier 4 a possibility across the whole of England, we can only foresee an announcement made for the return to a pausing of the 2020-21 season any day now. We thank the league for all the efforts to try and keep football going, but also recognising the very tough position all clubs find themselves in. A very best wishes to all clubs in the NPL at this challenging time. “

We’d like to wish all supporters, volunteers, players, coaching staff, media team and everyone involved in non league football a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
