Goals from Kane Wilkes, Connor Brown, and Max Baker see Lincoln United take the game away from Brighouse in the closing stages. Some better composure in front of goal would have seen a heavier scoreline, but it was a comfortable all-in-all for the visitors throughout.
Jack Varley hit well over right footed from the edge of ‘D’ on 14 minutes, before five minutes later the hosts had, what was for most of the game the closest to opening the scoring. A ball from the left on halfway hit diagonally found Captain Nathan Curtis who fired across Lincoln Goalie Heath Richardson but wide of his far post.
Opposition Captain, and former Brighouse man Jack Dando knocked a ball up the line to Connor Brown, but from the narrow angle hit straight at Michael Acquah. Andy Janssen also had a shot loop off a Brighouse Defender that was gathered soon after.
The hosts ended the half via a tame curling effort from Curtis with options in and around the box.
Lincoln began the second with an in-swinging corner to Acquah’s near post that needed punching away, with a short corner routine soon after needing cleared off the line. A low ball from the left five minutes later from Max Baker was missed centrally on the slide by Andy Janssen.
Just after the hour and it was Lincoln again asking the questions, but a 63rd minute free kick from Owen Vincent from just left and outside of the box was curled to the far post, away from the wall, but also wide of bar and post. He swung a cross into the box soon after, but too high for attacking heads in the box.
Substitute Kane Wilkes created Lincoln’s best chance up to that point when he cut in from the right and left footed whipped a shot just wide of the post. The visitors also had the ball in the net soon after, but a flag was raised for offside. They also had a free header over as well.
On 78 minutes the deadlock was broken; Owen Vincent put a ball through to the left of the 18-yard box, Acquah appeared to bring Connor Brown down, but Wilkes was on hand to tap into an empty net. A turn-and-finish from Connor Brown doubled said lead 7 minutes later.
In the last two minutes of the match Brighouse had a corner beat the Goalie but cleared away up the other end out to the right, a low cross came in and Max Baker firing into the roof of the net at the far post to wrap up the victory for the Lincolnshire side.
