A bad day at the office around for Brighouse Town last Saturday at Ashington as they surrendered their seven match unbeaten run.
The weather was atrocious throughout the game with driving rain and a strong wind off the North Sea and steadily deteriorating pitch conditions. Their afternoon fate was finally sealed when goalkeeper Michael Acquah was sent off with five minutes to go.
Town played against the wind and rain in the first half and with two minutes to go must have thought they had done a “great job” on the home side to keep them out. However Josh Gilchrist struck for the Colliers and they went in 1-0 to the good.
In that first 45 minutes Town did have their chances against the elements but Nathan Curtis, Romario Dunne and Youssef Chentouf did have chances to have found the net.
In the first quarter of the second half Town could not adjust to the wind behind them abd kept over hitting the ball and chances were lost.
Gilchrist doubled his tally in the 74th minute when referee Steve Beresford awarded a penalty against Town fullback Ferdinand Annor and 11 minutes later keeper Acquah was adjudged to have brought down the home skipper Karl Ross just inside the box.
Louis Burns made it 3-0 after Acquah had protested his feelings he got to the ball first.
Jordan Barnett took over in goal for Town for the remaining few minutes.
Several of Towns players were suffering from hypothermia in the dressing room after the game and skipper Harvey Booth was particularly bad.
Town have appealed Acquah sending off and until the outcome is known he can play on but Barnett and Annor have both gone to five cautions and will miss Saturdays away trip to Heaton Stannington just on the road from Newcastle United’s St James Park.
In the pipeline for Town is a teaming up with League 2 Accrington Stanley and manager Grant Black was hoping to sign on loan this week midfielder Finton Tunstall.
