Brighouse Town got their season off to a winning one last Saturday with a 1-0 home win over Frickley Athletic.
A rare occasion these days for Town to get past an opening round of a cup competition but they did in the extra qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup.
They did so with a Danny Edward’s goal in the 47th minute after he had only come into the line up in the half-time break.
The step 5 club from South Yorkshire were an accomplished outfit and the tie could have gone either way.
Curtis Peters at right back, had a very good first half but had to retire into the second period with a leg injury and new centre back Harvey Booth was very commanding alongside Matty Nebard.
Town’s forward line worked hard throughout in the hot sunshine with Jordan Preston leading the line well and wide debutant Mohssen Mohammed giving the visitors plenty to think about with his skills and pace.
In added on time substitute Bolton Makwedza headed away from under the bar and Booth made a great block in the box.
Town will now travel to the winners of the replay between Cheshire club Winsford United and Greater Manchester club West Didsbury & Chorlton who drew 1-1 and were replaying this week.
On Saturday Town entertain Blyth Town (3pm) at the Heffernan Utilities Stadium and face NPL newcomers who lost their FA tie 2-1 to fellow North East side Horden CW last Saturday.
Manager Grant Black was pleased with his sides performance against Frickley and has no other injury worries besides the Peters knock.
“I was pleased with the way the side played with it being their first competitive game together, and also the way they also grafted and aimed to be first to the ball” he added
Next Tuesday Town travel to Durham to take on Newton Aycliffe (7.45).
