We managed to have a chat with goal scorer from last weekend’s FA Cup defeat to Runcorn Town Eddie Church ahead of this weekend’s game against Clitheroe and it’s a tie he is relishing.
” I’m looking forward to Saturday’s game against Clitheroe as it’s a chance to fight for three points again! It’s also the first league game of the season and there’s no better occasion. It’s two teams looking to do well this season so it’ll be a good test for us. It was a good but long pre-season so be nice to get out there and play a game that means something in terms of league standings. It’s been good seeing the new lads integrate with the rest of the squad and we’re looking strong but so are they with their new signings so we can’t underestimate them. In terms of the goal last week, it’s always good to score in the first competitive game of the season and that’s hopefully just the start for me as I’m wanting to become the top goalscorer this year.”
Eddie joined Brighouse as a natural number nine but in recent times, he has been moved out onto the wing which is something he is enjoying.
“At first I wasn’t used to it and I didn’t know what I was doing fully but now I’ve got into it and I’ve spoke to the manager about it more often asking him how to improve my game, I’m starting to enjoy it a lot more now, I’m getting used to the role and it’s a position I believe I can still be a threat in front of goal from. The competition from the other lads in my position spurs me on a lot. It’s not a case of that I’ve got the shirt because I’ve changed positions, I’ve still got to fight and earn the right to play every week.”
We will be welcoming up to 400 spectators into the game on Saturday and Eddie believes the fans coming back into grounds has a huge impact on players.
” It’s great to see the fans coming back into grounds, they give you that extra 5% when you need it in the final minutes when they are cheering you on. Being on the wing, I hear their every cheer and every bit of motivation which does give me extra energy to work hard and have pride in the shirt. We took a good number of fans down to Runcorn and I look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday at the ground!”
